Expectations for Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

When planning for orthopedic surgery, a post-surgical rehabilitation program can help ensure the best results. Your surgeon and physical therapist can work closely together so that the important steps of recovery take place the right way, at the right time.

Some people chose their physical therapist prior to surgery. This enables them to plan for a post-surgical visit and understand in advance the possible course of treatment they can expect. Since physical therapy often occurs several times a week, scheduling your appointments in advance may be more convenient for planning transportation or fitting into your schedule. Obtaining the operative report or imaging films (X-rays, MRIs, CT scans) from your doctor may help your therapist to better understand your injury and the type of repair.

After Surgery
Immediately following surgery, you may be treated by the inpatient physical therapy staff at the hospital. A physical therapist may be the one who fits you for assistive devices like crutches, a walker or sling, and teaches you their proper use. Supervised and proper movement under a physical therapist’s care will help your body recover from surgery and help the healing process begin.

Depending on your needs, a home visit by a physical therapist may take place before you proceed to outpatient physical therapy at a private clinic. Your doctor or case manager will advise you on the treatment plan that is right for your surgery.

Outpatient Physical Therapy
Outpatient physical therapy is usually covered by your insurance company with a co-payment or deductible similar to that of an office visit to your doctor. By providing your insurance information when booking your first appointment, your physical therapist can obtain the necessary approvals from your insurance company.  You will need to bring your physician’s order for physical therapy.
